There is a clients-and-setup FAQ produced by Harry Kriz.
It lives at nebula.lib.vt.edu, in /pub/windows/winsock/wtcpop**.zip.

There's a comprehensive TCP/IP FAQ at rtfm.mit.edu; look for the
comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc FAQ using the /usenet-by-hierarchy tree.
Many of the FAQs in the world live and are updated there.

Well, here's the announcement that I probably should have put out
earlier - I just wanted my registered users to feel nice and smug that
they had a newer copy than all the unregistered users for a week or
so, before I put out a general announcement (actually, I just never
got round to announcing it!)

WFTPD - the all round useful Windows FTP Daemon.

WFTPD has the following useful features:

o Support for the majority of FTP commands (it doesn't support the
  obscure ones for mail, etc.)
o Multiple logins and simultaneous transfers allowed
o Runs over most winsock drivers (some people have reported occasional
  problems with PC-NFS winsock, but this doesn't appear to be limited to
  WFTPD, and they promise to fix it soon.)
o Fast - with an option to make it go even faster (at the expense of
  your other Windows applications) - I get 120-200K per second on average
  over 8 bit ethernet
o Secured access by means of password authentication, address-based
  host authentication, and the ability to restrict users to named subtrees
  of your directory structure
o Remote access to ALL drives on your system is possible
o Windows friendly - does not flash cursors while it is transferring,
  or hold up processing (unless greedy option is enabled)
o Can run 'invisible' - with no user access to the program
o Easy configuration of user/password lists, security features,
  logging to file.  All features adjustable through menus - no need to
  edit clumsy INI files.
o Logs logins, anonymous logins, gets, puts, commands - what's logged
  is configurable
o Logs to file that can be read by other applications, including
  session number, time and date stamp.  This information is also logged
  to the screen.
o Small - 140K
o Cute little icon


In addition, for the low price of $15, you get these features:

o Easily configurable greeting - the unregistered one tells people
  that you can't afford $15
o As many transfers per login as required - only 5 are allowed in the
  unregistered version before you have to re-login.  (Directory listings
  don't count towards this 5)
o Greater say in future features
o Peace of mind - can you sleep at nights knowing that your $15 may be
  the only thing standing between me and a residency visa? :-)

I also have problems using WSARCHIE, to the point where I don't find it
useful. The first several days I tried the new version, it just seemed to sit
there for many many minutes with no visible change to any of the information
it displayes about queue, etc. Yet I could use WINARCH to those same servers
and get a very quick response. It seems to me there is clearly something wrong
with WSARCHIE.

I'm running Trumpet Winsock 1.0A on a 50MHz 486DX with an ethernet connection.
I have excellent results with everything else I am running.

Note that that is only a WWW document pointing to sunsite's FTP archive,
so if you can't get to sunsite easily you're still in trouble.

Also I don't have the time to maintain that document (let alone a full
WinSock archive), so it will rapidly become out of date. You may notice
that it is no longer referenced from NEXOR server's home page; the stuff
that is there is keeping my busy enough...

It does show how useful and nice a WWW WinSock archive could be, and
it would be really great if somebody would set one up. Do something
back for the Internet community and everlasting fame could be yours!

There is more to this.  The first version of WSARCHIE seems to work just fine
to the US archie servers.  This new  release times out for me all the time
when accessing any US site.  I have been able to use this new client the a UK
site successfully.

As far as I am aware Dynalink() is not a function. Isn't this just
part of the error message?

You would get an error saying undefined Dynalink for any particular
function which could not be found when run-time loading a DLL.
Isn't it the RTL which has failed to find a function referenced in
application code which is expected to be found in a named DLL?
